“Werder Bremen” and “Hertha” are having a not so respectable fight. It’s 0-0 for a long time until Nicklas Fulkrug strikes.

After the final whistle, Werder professionals rushed to Niklas Fulkrug and hugged their goalscorer. The World Cup contender scored in the 85th minute to secure a 1-0 (0-0) win for Bremen against Hertha on Friday, ending their losing streak.

His first goal since early October should have been another argument for national coach Hans Flick’s World Cup appearance. “It works well with a refillable jug. That it also falls behind,” said Hertha player Marco Richter on DAZN. What did Richter mean? After Anthony Jung’s cross, Fulkrug rose more than eleven meters into the air and headed the ball past Hertha goalkeeper Christensen. “To win an evening game like this here in Bremen just before the end is really special,” said a delighted Fulkrug himself. The 29-year-old football player has remained cautious for a possible World Cup bid. “I’m just trying to stay with myself, I’m just trying to do my job.”

After three previous league games without a win or a goal, Werder moved up to sixth place so far. “Herta” remains at the bottom of the table.

If something went ahead, then about filling the jar

If anything went ahead in this weak game in front of 42,100 spectators, it was through Fulkrug and Marvin Ducks. Werder’s strike pair were kept in good check by Hertha’s defense for the most part. If one of the two managed to get loose, it immediately became dangerous. After some good preparation work by Fulkrug, Duksh (26′) shot over the bar from a tight angle. Five minutes later, Fulkrug then attempted a shot himself which Berlin goalkeeper Oliver Christensen was able to push away for a corner.

In general, will he fly to the World Cup in Qatar or will Flick leave him at home? Neither Bremen’s sporting director Frank Baumann nor captain Marco Friedl, who was suspended, wanted to comment before the game. The 29-year-old rarely caught the eye in the game until he headed in just before the end. Flick should have recorded that too.

Hardly anything came together offensively

Not much came from Herta. Both teams often struggled with the crucial pass deep. The guests also made individual mistakes, especially in the midfield. Suat Serdar in particular did not play well in the first half. Due to the loss of the ball or errors in the passes, the 25-year-old player invited Bremen to counterattack several times. A further complication for coach Sando Schwartz’s side was that striker Stevan Jovetic had to leave after less than half an hour. “Herta” became half dangerous for the first time in the 56th minute when Lukebakio took a shot wide.

Otherwise, offensively at least, almost nothing happens until Bremen’s Mitchell Weiser suddenly finds himself free in front of Christensen shortly before the end. After a low pass from Romano Schmid, he mishit the ball. Things were better just before the end, however, at the end of the day.
