A mother who refused to terminate her pregnancy sees her daughter’s miracle walking for the first time
This mother did not believe the diagnosis, she refused to terminate the pregnancy, and today her daughter, who, according to doctors, “will never walk, talk, eat or even breathe on her own”, looks like this: beautiful, strong, talking and walking!
“We just found out we’re having a girl the other day. We wanted a girl. We move from the highest to the lowest [dos sentimentos] In less than 24 hours,” recalls his mother, Michelle Bauer.
Fortunately, to everyone’s surprise, Lacey took it and went further. Father Michael Bauer says little Lacey is a daily “miracle.” “Every day you witness a miracle,” he thanked.
Recommend termination of pregnancy
At 20 weeks pregnant, an ultrasound revealed Lacey had spina bifida, a neural tube problem that can lead to paralysis, brain changes and severe traumatic nerve damage.
At that time, doctors advised Michelle to abort the baby. But the mother’s heart told them they were wrong, and she decided to give her unborn daughter a chance.
risky surgery
Then a marathon began in the lives of the couple from the state of Indiana, USA.
First, Michelle underwent a risky 3-hour surgery to close Lacey’s spinal cord while she was still in the womb.
Mother and daughter underwent surgery in April 2020.
More than 35 medical specialists performed the delicate operation, and Michelle was bedridden for the rest of her pregnancy.
The turn
Lacey was born by C-section in July of that year and spent 18 days in the NICU learning to feed herself and start moving her toes and ankles.
Doctors said she was partially paralyzed from the waist down, but from day one, Lacey began beating the odds.
To everyone’s surprise, Lacey began to thrive. By the time he was 19 months old, he was already speaking at the same level as a 3-year-old.
Physically, he never let his partial paralysis slow him down. He learned to roll over, sit up and stand up on his own.
how is he today
Parents are delighted with the evolution of their daughter. “It’s really amazing because a year ago he was on his feet for the first time,” Michael said.
Now the little girl who is almost three years old has taken her first steps with the help of a walker.
“He’s doing more than that doctor ever imagined,” Michelle said proudly.
“He can stand on his own now. He can climb on the couch and ride his rocking horse into town,” her mother recalls.
nice smile
Lacey is always smiling and her laugh can melt even the coldest heart.
She is smart and curious, and most importantly, determined, her mother said.
His parents believe that this determination helped him face difficulties and learn to walk on his own.
“It’s been a year now and he can walk in his walker, and I mean fully support his full weight, which is just amazing,” said the mother.
And there is no lack of hope in the family of these fighters.
“I really believe we’ll get to a point where he won’t even need a walker. He has that drive.”
