A new 2023 NATIONAL HOLIDAY in Brazil has people talking

A new holiday may be made official in 2023. The new bill No. 960/22 establishes Day of Indigenous Peoples as a national holiday. According to the proposal, the date will be set in April.

Earlier the day in question was known as India Day. However, Law No. 14,402 promulgated on July 8, 2022 established the date as Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

The project authored by MP Fabio Trad (PSD-MS) is a resolution Day of Indigenous Peoples as a new national holiday in April. The proposal amends Law No. 662/49 by including day April 19 as a national holiday.

Therefore, that Day of Indigenous Peoples will have the same force of law as other commemorative days, such as Christmas on December 25, for example. The MP said the measure is expected to take effect as soon as it is approved.

Initially, the proposal was presented at the Plenary session of the Parliament on April 19 of this year. The proposal is currently awaiting the final opinion of the rapporteur in the Committee on Human Rights and Minorities before moving to the Committee on Culture.
