World – The Danish police rejected the thesis of a terrorist motivation in the attack this Sunday (3) in a shopping center in Copenhagen. The young suspect responsible for the attack has already been identified by health services because of his psychiatric history. Three people were killed and seriously injured in the shooting.

Identified as a Dane, the suspect is 22 years old. He did not have a license to carry the weapon used in the attack. Authorities believe the shooting was random.

“Our assessment is that these are accidental victims,” said Soren Thomassen, chief inspector of police in Copenhagen. “He was known to mental health services for a history of psychiatric illness,” Thomassen added in an interview.

Witnesses say that more than 100 people ran towards the exit door of the shopping center, while others tried to take shelter in restaurants and shops after the first shots. Employees of the fenced area barricaded the door and stayed there for about 45 minutes.

The suspect was arrested at 5:48 p.m. (local time) while carrying a weapon, investigators said. A search operation in the local region of Zeeland was launched early yesterday evening to rule out the possibility of accomplices.

“I will wait to comment on the motive, revenge or not,” said Inspector Thomassen, who also noted: “There is no indication that the suspect was working with other people.”

The suspect must appear in court for a preliminary hearing within 24 hours of the attack and will be formally charged with murder, police said.

Today, the police confirmed the number of victims: three people died – a 17-year-old Dane, a 17-year-old Dane and a 47-year-old man with Russian citizenship who was staying in that country.

Four more shot people were identified, two Danish citizens, a 40-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man, and two Swedish citizens, a 50-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl. They are all in serious condition.

“Denmark was hit by a vicious attack on Sunday night. A few dead. And more wounded. Innocent families shopping or eating out. Children, teenagers and adults,” Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in a statement. “It’s astonishing, shocking, senseless. Our beautiful and normally so safe capital was changed in a split second,” he added.

The royal family reacted with a joint statement. “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the victims, their relatives and all those affected by the tragedy,” Queen Margrethe, Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary said. “The situation requires unity and care and we would like to thank the police, emergency services and health authorities for their quick and effective efforts during these hours.”

British singer Harry Styles canceled Sunday’s concert that was scheduled to take place at the Royal Arena, less than a kilometer from the mall. The musician wrote on Snapchat: “My team and I are praying for everyone involved in the Copenhagen mall shooting. I’m shocked.”
