Free State police say the alleged perpetrators of the racist attack incident in the resort of Maselspoort will now face a charge of attempted murder.
Initially, the police opened a general case of assault against the suspects.
Police spokesman Motanzi Makele said the investigator in the case is now working on the instructions of the senior state prosecutor.
Two teenage girls were visited by a group of white men at the Maselspoort Resort swimming pool outside Bloemfontein on Christmas Day.
A video of the incident is circulating on social media.
Makele says they expect the perpetrator or perpetrators to be brought to justice soon.
“It was after receiving this evidence that the case was presented to the Senior State Attorney who directed that the charge could be amended to attempted murder on the facts. The investigator’s approach in this regard, as the mandate of the police was to investigate to arrest, not to arrest and then investigate. The report was returned by the senior prosecutor with clear instructions.

Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Lindiwe Sisulu says she is “disgusted” by reports of a racist attack by a group of white men on black children.
Minister Sisulu says he supports all steps taken so far by the Free State Government, which has instructed Tourism MEC Makalo Mohale to deal with the matter with the urgency it deserves.
The minister says reports of racism in tourism facilities are having a negative impact on the sector, which is recovering well after being hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
