Brazil – Actor André Gonçalves was arrested in Benfica, Rio de Janeiro, because he owes more than R$450,000 in alimony to his two daughters, who are suing him in court. He spent Thursday evening (7) in prison, and the next day he was released after a detention hearing, and he must serve his sentence under house arrest, with an electronic bracelet.
Since 2007, Gonçalves has owed alimony to his daughters Valentina Benini and Manuela Seiblitz, both from his former relationships with journalist Cynthia Benini and actress Teresa Seiblitz. Valentina and Manuela sued their father when they turned 18.
In an interview with O Globo newspaper last December, when he learned of the court’s decision, André Gonçalves said he was “devastated.” The actor, who is unemployed, criticized the rigidity of the law that foresees prison sentences for those who cannot pay alimony in Brazil and spoke of his regret that he no longer has a good relationship with his daughters – he has been blocked from contacting them on social networks.
“It is cruel that this law (alimony) determines imprisonment in a false prison because it does not solve. I don’t have 350,000 BRL or 110,000 BRL. I will be arrested. So, I think it’s disproportionate because since I’m a self-employed worker, I can’t pay R$6,000 for one and R$4,500 for the other. I feel like I’m on a firing squad. I’m not a bad person. I never went with them. The son does it to the father. My lawyer knows the extent of my despair, my suffering, because mostly these are people I have affection for, whom I love, with whom I have lived for 20 years, but for the last five years I have felt like a fugitive, thinking that at any moment I will be arrested, without the right to defend myself. We went to court, tried to revise it, tried to settle with the mothers, but it was not accepted,” he said.
André cried 12 times in a 2-hour interview with the newspaper, also lamenting the deterioration of his relationship with his daughters. From his marriage to actress Myrian Rios, he still has a son, Pedro (20), with whom he maintains a good relationship.
