Are you planning to buy a new Xiaomi band? You should know it

Over the years, the premiere of each new smart band of the Chinese giant has caused a great stir. The Xiaomi Smart Band 7 Pro strap looked perfect. Unfortunately, it turns out not to be the case. The producer surprised us once again, but not positively.

I got bored of Xiaomi bands. I said belt

Personally, for the past few years I have been a faithful fan of Mi Bands (today Smart Bands, because in the meantime the manufacturer decided to rebrand). I had Mi Band 2, Mi Band 3, Mi Smart Band 4, Mi Smart Band 5 and Mi Smart Band 6, and on the last one I ended my adventure with the straps of this brand.

When the Smart Band 6 NFC debuted in Poland, which was the first Xiaomi Smart Band in the Vistula country to support contactless payments, I almost immediately wanted to order it, but I thought that since I already have the Mi Smart Band 6, it makes no sense to buy the NFC version and wait for the premiere of the Smart Band 7 NFC. To my (and not only) surprise, the manufacturer presented only the Smart Band 7 in Poland without an NFC module.

That was the moment I said: purple. It seemed obvious to me that once Xiaomi started offering bracelets with support for contactless payments, it should release either only versions with NFC, or parallel models with and without it for people who do not want to pay this way and would not want to overpay for something they won’t use anyway.

The Xiaomi Smart Band 7 Pro strap hides an unpleasant surprise

The cure for this profession should have been the Xiaomi Smart Band 7 Pro, which debuted in China at the beginning of July 2022. After the official premiere, it was finally possible to say that the manufacturer has created the perfect band, not only with NFC, but also with GPS (or actually support for five GNSS systems: next to GPS, also Glonass, Galileo, QZSS and Beidou), and the lack of GNSS support was cited as the biggest drawback of Smart Bands.

I admit that I was looking forward to the Polish premiere of the Xiaomi Smart Band 7 Pro, which took place yesterday. However, after seeing the Polish price, I said again purplebecause PLN 499 for a strap is too much for me, when you can buy an OPPO Watch with Wear OS and support for NFC payments using Google Wallet for a little more.

Contactless payments are mentioned here for a reason, because it turns out that the Xiaomi Smart Band 7 Pro, which you can buy in Poland for PLN 499, does not have NFC, so you cannot pay with it! This is a huge surprise and disappointment at the same time, because it should have been a perfect band, with no flaws to disqualify it.

In this context, the presentation of the Xiaomi Smart Band 7 without NFC in Poland seems significant – that it may not be just a one-off “exception”. I do not hide that this worried me, so I sent a question to Xiaomi if this means that Smart Bands with NFC with support for contactless payments will no longer be introduced in Poland. By the time the article was published I had not received a reply – as soon as I do, I will add it below as soon as possible.

For now, we can only guess what’s behind it. Here it is worth recalling that Xiaomi made contactless payments available in collaboration with Mastercard. Have companies discontinued it unexpectedly quietly? Or maybe NFC payments are used by so few people that the manufacturer has declared it unprofitable to offer Smart Bands with NFC? So far, we have more questions than answers.
