Banco Santander appoints Ángel Rivera as its new CEO in Spain

Banco Santander has appointed the chief executive officer of Santander in Spain Angel Rivera, who until today held the position of Director of Commercial Banking at Santander in Spain. Rivera thus replaces Antonio Simões, who combined his position as CEO of the bank in Spain with that of regional manager for Europe, a role he joined the group in September 2020.

As announced by the entity, the change will take effect on February 1, 2023. While the second announced term, of Mahesh Aditya as Chief Risk Manager Grupo Santander will come into force in March of the same year. For his part, António Simões will continue to lead Europe as a member of the group’s board of directors, reporting to the chief executive officer, and will continue with his responsibility for managing and overseeing the bank’s operations in this region, reporting to Managers for Spain, United Kingdom, Poland and Portugal.

Banco Santander explained that this appointment will be key to continue promoting business in Spain and to accelerate commercial performance plans in this market while implementing a transformation strategy and the foundation of a common business and business model in four European countries. The new President of the Management Board will cooperate with Cristina Ruizdirector of Santander in Spain from April 2021 and director of Transformation, already having responsibility for technology and operations and human resources and organization, which will add to her current functions the management of individual businesses.

Ángel Rivera has experience more than 30 years in the financial sector and a long career at Grupo Santander, where he joined in April 2013 as head of distribution in a network of offices in Spain. It was, moreover, general manager of the Commercial Banking department of the group between 2015 and 2017 and also has international experience, with a key role in the transformation of the bank’s operations in Mexico.
