Bomb threat on plane: fighter jet escorts holidaymakers to Spain

Due to a bomb threat, an Easyjet passenger plane arriving from London was escorted by a fighter jet on its approach to the Spanish holiday island of Menorca. The incident happened just before 5pm on Sunday, Cadena Ser radio station and other Spanish media reported on Monday, citing the responsible police unit, the Guardia Civil. Authorities confirmed this information upon request.

The bomb threat turned out to be false, he said.

According to reports, the Airbus A319 landed on Sunday under tighter security measures but without any problems at Mahón airport in Menorca. An 18-year-old British man was arrested as a suspect, the “Diario de Mallorca” newspaper and other Balearic media reported, citing authorities. He is known to have published on the Internet the bomb threat from the plane of the English airline.

Initially, no further details are known about the arrested person. The young man is due to appear before a judge on Monday. Spreading a false bomb threat is punishable by three months to one year in prison in Spain.
