Businesses remain closed as protests continue in Mbombela, Mpumalanga – SABC News

Businesses remain closed in Pienaar outside Mbombela, Mpumalanga, as protests against fuel hikes continue.

Bricks and burning tires were used to block roads.

The road leading to eMoyeni Mall in the area has also been closed for the second day.

The police are working hard to clear the roads.

Emoyeni Mall manager Shadrack Maswanganyi says tenants are losing a lot of money.

He said the mall was closed as a precaution.

“It affects us a lot. Yesterday [Wednesday] we didn’t open the mall. Today [Thursday] we just came thinking we will open but we think the situation is still bad. We [will] just keep our mall closed to be safe.”

“So you [protesters] don’t come here for vandalism. But the problem they [are protesting against] it really affects us. If [it’s] not this [fuel hike] it’s the load shedding,” explains Maswangani.

Police in Mpumalanga arrested eight people in connection with protests:
