Young people from across the Cape Town area gathered on Mandela Day at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town.
As part of an initiative by the NGO Balls not Guns, the children were taught about their heritage but also had a fun day away from the daily stress of gangsterism and violence.
Playing soccer games in the yard of the nation’s oldest western structure, the children found joy in a place that stood as a symbol of oppression.

Various other events were held at several locations in Cape Town to mark Nelson Mandela Day.
Several non-governmental organizations have used the day to collect food packages to be distributed to those in need.
