City of Cape Town warns residents of online housing scams – SABC News

Cape Town residents have expressed concern over the latest scam to do the rounds in the Western Cape. This is an online housing scam targeting the most vulnerable residents.

Specific target areas include Khayelitsha, Stellenbosch, Montana Paarl and Mitchells Plain. Whatsapp message scam asks them to pay R2300 in government housing benefit.

Scammers promise to help residents get a house within two weeks after paying the specified amount.

Langa resident Sinathi Mzamo says: “I’m very aware of this and I don’t think it’s a good thing for people to do because people are waiting and have been waiting for years for houses and they’re not getting anything but why would anyone do such a thing for people who are poor and want to make a living and they want to scam them out of R2500 for it while they have nothing so I think it’s a bad thing to do.
