Tour de France riders will spend most of stage nine in Switzerland. However, the grand finale takes place on the French side in a ski resort.

Before the first rest day, the first real Alpine stage of the Tour de France is approaching. The 192.9 kilometer route from Aigle to Chatel Les Portes du Soleil has four climbs to be mastered, two of which are class one.

Visiting leaders

The ninth round starts in Eagle, the headquarters of the UCI world cycling association. If you position yourself there as a spectator, you will see the drivers twice. As the peloton from Aigle takes a detour in Switzerland before stopping again at the UCI. As the first rest day is on Monday, the pros can put in a bit more energy than they normally would on the Alpine stage.

Too easy to attack

The climb to the Pas de Morgins just before the finish is quite long, over 15 kilometers, but never really difficult. Leader Thaddeus Pogakar will not be able to advance with attacks. Then there’s about six kilometers of downhill before it goes – very moderately uphill – four kilometers to the finish.

The concern of the coronavirus

Two cases of coronavirus shocked the peloton on Saturday morning. Pogakar’s assistants Vegard Stake Lengen and Geoffrey Bouchard had to withdraw from the race. After more than a week of rest, the virus suddenly returns. Of course, there is concern about further incidents. The teams and the organizer ASO will closely monitor the development and take measures if necessary.
