Story developments: Death toll rises to 15 in Soweto tavern shooting
The police forensics team is busy at the scene and members of the community have come out in numbers.
It is still unclear what could have led to the mass killings.
Meanwhile, Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Elias Mauela says the incident at the tavern in Nomzamo informal settlement in Orlando West, Soweto points to a random shooting with the intention of killing as many people as possible.
Twenty-three visitors were shot dead in the incident, which happened in the early hours of this morning.
Fourteen of them were killed, another nine were injured, four of them critically and taken to hospital.
Mauela said police are investigating the motive for the shooting.
“Twelve of those people died here on the spot and one more died on arrival at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and later the 14th victim also died. We don’t know the reason, this is a licensed pub and it was still within the permitted opening hours of that pub. Two of the victims were handed over to the street. Most of those who passed through here and were injured are between the ages of 19 and 35.”
