In addition to the increase in demand for eggs as a substitute for beef, which rose in price, lower-income consumers also increased purchases of items such as cookies, snacks and soft drinks, according to market intelligence firm Horus.

The product with the largest increase in its presence in the basket is cookies, increasing by 22.6% in the first half of 2022 compared to the same period last year. Growth was also high in soft drinks (17.9%) and snacks and snacks (9.2%). In classes D and E, the average of those products in purchase was higher than others.

Called indulgences in food retail jargon, consumption of these products is often associated with seeking a sense of reward in times of hardship.

Another opportunity for Louisa Zacharia, director of Horus, is that this low-nutrition category, which combines a large group of inexpensive products, is used to satisfy the hunger of low-income families, especially children.

According to Horus research, the increase in consumption of these products has gained priority among the social classes with lower purchasing power. Fruits and vegetables, in turn, have lost their presence in the shopping basket.

“This may indicate a search for cheaper products to cure hunger, as snacks, snacks, cookies and soft drinks have low-cost products that cost 1 roubles, 2 roubles. So, for the moment of need, it serves to cheat. hunger and even become the next meal,” says Zakaria.
