Did Microsoft stitch an ad for Edge browser into the system cleaner app?

Microsoft PC Manager is a new application that is currently still in the testing phase. One of the users participating in the public beta program found it and decided to share the find on Twitter. The tool lets you check startup apps, download missing updates, or run a disk cleanup.

However, concerns were raised by a series of prompts to reset the default browser to Edge spotted in Microsoft PC Manager. One of them warns you about potential problems and includes a check box with Edge as the default browser. The user who does not know nuances will certainly do what he is advised.

In Windows 10 or Windows 11, desktop pop-ups remind you to use the Edge browser, hence the suspicion of such practices

Don’t get me wrong, Microsoft Edge is one of the best browsers on the market today, and it works especially well for cloud gaming. However, such a product should be protected, not discouraged with pushy marketing. We hope that the final version of Microsoft PC Manager will be improved.

Microsoft’s commitment to security is evidenced by its recent announcement to abandon the niche standards of the old era. This is about disabling the TLS 1.0 and 1.1 (Transport Layer Security) protocols in Internet Explorer and the EdgeHTML engine for Microsoft Edge. The company’s decision does not adversely affect the level of protection for Windows 11 users.
