Eight new cases of monkeypox were reported Thursday by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH). All cases were in adult men and occurred during the past week. Thus, the total number of recorded cases in the state rose to 21. The first case was announced on 18 May.

Public updates on the spread of monkeypox in Massachusetts are now released weekly, every Thursday. Eight people with new cases were diagnosed between June 23 and 29, according to DPH. All eight people are currently in isolation to prevent further spread of the virus.

A total of 351 confirmed cases of monkeypox among U.S. residents were recorded this year, according to the CDC. Patients generally recover in two to four weeks, and there have been no deaths associated with the current epidemic, according to DPH.

The first cases in Massachusetts and other parts of the country were related to international travel, but recent cases have not. Although men who have sex with men make up a “large proportion” of the cases identified so far, the risk posed by this virus is not limited to the LGBTQ community.

Anyone who has had close contact with another person carrying the virus could be in danger, although DPH said it does not spread easily among humans.

Transmission usually occurs by direct contact with body fluids and wounds or by touching objects such as clothing and bedding that are contaminated with the virus. It can also be spread by respiratory droplets, but this happens less frequently and requires longer face-to-face contact. The locations of rashes and lesions in many recent cases suggest transmission during sexual intercourse. Smallpox does not spread through short, casual conversations or touching objects such as handles, DPH said.

Early symptoms of the virus include rash, fever, headache, sore throat and swollen lymph nodes. A rash of monkeypox develops lesions that begin flat but become raised and filled with fluid.
