Luciano Coutinho, former president of BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development), is preparing a rescue plan for Brazil’s defense industry at the request of the federal government.

Most pressing, and first on Coutinho’s list, is Avibras, a national rocket company facing a serious crisis. Depending on the success of the company’s rescue plan, new industries and companies should be considered.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) has ordered Ministers José Mucio (Defense) and Geraldo Alcmin (Development) to make revitalizing the defense industry a priority at the start of his government.
