Tizen’s move to Wear OS helped Samsung get a lot of features from the Android ecosystem and a collection of important apps. Also, users can expect many data management features to come to Wear OS watches in the future. According to a new report, Google is bringing a more complete backup mechanism.
Google has been working on Wear OS’s backup feature for the past few months. According to a teardown of the APK by 9To5Google, Google Play Services version 22.42.12 offers a clearer view of the feature. It will soon offer backup of apps, app data, device settings, watch faces and even tiles and their location. Device settings will include Wi-Fi passwords and app permissions.
The report also claims that this Wear OS smartwatch backup feature will be enabled and run automatically when the smartwatch is connected to Wi-Fi and charging. The user’s Google One storage will be used for these backups, and users can use the Settings app on the smartwatch or the watch’s companion smartphone app.
Additionally, the Google Wallet app, available for Android smartphones, will offer traffic, event and flight alerts on Wear OS smartwatches. It will display transport activity, notify users when their tickets are low or about to expire, and display saved deals and flight information.
Samsung already offers a full backup package for its Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 5 smartwatches, but if Google brings it directly through Play Services, users will have more options.
