Heatwave expected in several parts of South Australia on Sunday

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) conditions are forecast for these parts of South Africa on Sunday.

Heatwave expected on Sunday

According to SAWS, conditions are expected to persist until midnight on Sunday in the Northern Cape, Western Cape, Free State and Eastern Cape.

These areas will be affected by heatwave conditions:

  • Kai! Garib / Augrabies Falls

  • Magallon/Warrenton
  • Kgatelopele / Daniëlskuil
  • !Kheis/Groblershoop
  • Syan Cooma/Griquastad
  • Tokologo / Tokologo/Dealesville
  • Masilonyana / Branford
  • Maluti a Phofung / Van Reenen
  • Mansopa/Leadbrand

It warns that prolonged exposure to the midday sun carries health risks including dehydration and heat stroke.

“Stay hydrated. Seek shade/shelter. Work early morning and late afternoon to avoid midday sun.”

Level 1 warning issued for damaging surf

A level 1 warning for damaging surf was also issued for these areas on Sunday:

  • M_Matzikama / Strandfontein
  • M_Cederberg / Lamberts Bay
  • M_Saldanha Bay / Saldanha Bay
  • M_Table Bay / Table Bay
  • M_Cape Town / Cape Point
  • M_Overstrand / Hermanus
  • M_Cape Agulhas / Cape Agulhas 1

“Localized disruption to coastal activity is possible. Coastal users and anglers on low-lying rocks risk being caught off guard by high-energy waves and drawn out to sea. Additionally, there is local water ingress for small boats and personal watercraft (kayaks) and the risk of overturning.”

SAWS warns the public of unpredictable large waves in coastal areas.

“Small craft are advised to seek shelter in harbours, bays or inlets.”

“Under these conditions, fires can develop and spread rapidly, damaging property and possibly killing humans and/or animals.”
