More than a thousand vehicles per hour were recorded traveling south from midday on Tuesday. Southbound N1 between Mookgopong in Limpopo and Pretoria has heavy traffic.
To ease congestion, toll booths were opened at Nyl Plaza and Kranskop.
High volumes of traffic were also recorded at the Groblersbrug border crossing outside Lephalale in Botswana.
“Traffic has increased significantly on the N1 southbound towards Gauteng with 1,300 vehicles passing through the Kranskop toll plaza at two this afternoon, traffic officers have been deployed at critical points on the N1 to manage traffic flow. Impatient drivers are warned not to drive on the yellow line or oncoming traffic, especially at toll booths, as this may cause accidents that will further congest traffic,” explains traffic spokesperson Tidimalo Cheune.
