I’m a parenting expert – three simple techniques to help your child get rid of hiccups

As an adult, the occasional bout of hiccups can be infuriating and, in some cases, a little humiliating.

And you’re not alone if you’ve tried all the known methods to get rid of them quickly.

There is often no obvious reason why people have hiccups, but there are some common triggers, including stress, strong emotions such as excitement, or eating and drinking.

But what if our baby suffers the same dreaded fate? Should we try to stop them or let them be?

According to experts, hiccups are completely normal and do not harm small bodies (or large ones).

Hiccups require no treatment, says baby and parenting expert Rachel Fitzd, a regular speaker on The Baby Show, Fabulous.

“In the postnatal ward, we regularly got calls at 2am from frantic mums whose babies had hiccups and they didn’t know what to do,” she says.

Proving how normal they really are, she adds: “Babies have hiccups in the womb and you can see it as early as the 20-week scan.”

Parenting coach and early childhood expert Sophie Pickles agrees, but says they can be “a bit unnerving” at first – especially for new mums who are learning on the go.

But it’s worth remembering that they will go away on their own, she says. Sometimes you just need to give it some time.

Hiccups after feeding? Gas may be to blame

There is one thing that moms should watch out for and that is a regular pattern of hiccups right after feeding.

Sophie says: “If you notice your baby has frequent hiccups after a feed, gas could be to blame.

“If you think this is the case, try some of these simple techniques to ease your baby’s discomfort.”

Technique 1:

The first option is to hold the baby on your chest so that his head rests on your shoulder. Then walk up and down the stairs a few times.

Sophie says: “The movement can often release any trapped gas bubbles and your baby will enjoy the movement.”

Technique 2:

Sit the child on your knee and fully support his torso and head. Move them slowly in small circles, first clockwise and then counter-clockwise.

Technique 3:

Place your baby on your lap with his belly against your legs and his head fully supported.

In a light but firm motion, pat them and rub their backs to relieve trapped wind.

Whichever method you choose, Rachel encourages parents not to try things on babies that adults often try, including sucking on ice, scaring or holding their breath.

What can adults do to get rid of hiccups?

According to the NHS, there are several things adults can try to help get rid of hiccups:

  • breathe into a paper bag (don’t put it over your head)
  • pull your knees to your chest and bend forward
  • sip ice cold water
  • swallow some granulated sugar
  • bite into the lemon or taste the vinegar
  • hold your breath for a short time
