AN UNLIKELY witness has come forward with details of a deadly home invasion that has turned the investigation upside down.
Angel Marie Sawyer was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in September 2021 after a jury convicted her of first-degree murder in the 2018 killing of her husband.
Neighbors said they were shocked that beloved local businessman Milton Henry Sawyer Jr. and his wife may be tied up in a dark story of lust and manipulation that ended in his death.
A scandalous tragedy involving possession occurred in a quiet coastal community in North Carolina called Elizabeth City.
Milton was a family man who took over the collectibles business from his father, Oxygen reported.
“Collecting was definitely his passion,” his sister Lisa Louks told Oxygen’s “Snapped.”
“So when my brother was older, he started an antiques business in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, called The Treasure Hunter, where he also bought and sold gold.
The area where Milton was killed is described as “tidy and tidy” by Dennis Murphy, who delves into the details of an unexpected witness in the dark case on Friday’s “Dateline NBC.”
He added that it “just seems to scream, ‘It’s a safe place!’
Murphy’s report stated that the murder stemmed from shifting stories, multiple lies and an act of “biblical treason”.
Divorced with three young children, Milton met the then-38-year-old Angel Kesinger in 2011 at her children’s school.
She had four children of her own and was reportedly in the midst of separating from her husband, but Angel and Milton married in 2012.
“When she came on the scene, she started spending her time organizing, putting things in order to make the store look a little better,” Milton’s half-brother, David Carpenter, told ‘Snapped.’
“Milton appreciated it.
The couple’s blended family seemed to be thriving until Angel showed up at her neighbor’s front door in the early morning of August 2, 2018, bloodied and hysterical.
When she claimed someone had broken into her home and killed Milton, a neighbor called the police and investigators determined the scene was a robbery-and-gone scenario.
They reportedly saw obvious signs of a struggle and even determined that the intruder must have gotten in through their back door using a key left on the table.
Angel even said that the intruder knew that Milton had collectibles and traded in gold.
North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Steven Norman told ‘Snapped’ that aspect of the crime was “unusual”.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a key that was so freely available,” he said.
Angel told authorities the attacker pistol-whipped her and she was disoriented, so she didn’t know how long she had been tied to the floor, according to Oxygen.
When she was finally free, she was unable to revive Milton.
Milton suspected Angel of having an affair with a physical therapist named Isaac Melcher, whom she began seeing after a car accident, according to Elizabeth City’s Daily Advance.
The businessman allegedly confronted Isaac at his work, but he denied the relationship with Angelo. The physical therapist also denied any romance with Angelo when questioned by investigators.
“Anytime you’re miraculously not on your phone 12 hours after a murder where you’re allegedly having an affair with the survivor, that’s just a super red flag,” Norman said.
The publication reported that Milton’s siblings told investigators that Angel was a narcissist who demanded constant attention.
In Murphy’s report, someone said Angel told him, “It’s all in your head, you’re just very jealous.”
When investigators received a call from a friend of Isaac’s in Oregon, they learned that he had told his friend that he and Angel had planned Milton’s murder together.
After learning that the Sawyers were alone without the children on August 2nd, he put the plan into action.
Isaac claimed that Angel was an active participant in the murder and left the key behind for him.
After the friend agreed to tape three conversations with Isaac to help gather evidence against him, deputies arrested Angelo and Isaac on August 21, 2018.
Angel eventually admitted having an affair with Isaac, but claimed the murder was his idea.
She said he was obsessed with her and she didn’t tell the police sooner because she was afraid.
“Oh, the city will remember this forever,” someone said in Murphy’s report.
Another added: “It was such a… shock.”
“I remember immediately losing it – like I was just crying,” someone else recalled of the incident.
