The murder investigation began in 2012 when the two children of Peter and QC Chadwick were spotted waiting for their parents at a bus stop after school.

This behavior seemed unusual for the family, as the Chadwicks picked up their children from the bus stop daily.

“The Chadwicks are not the type of couple to neglect their duty to their children,” Newport Beach Police spokeswoman Jen Manzella told 20/20.

“There she is [the neighbor] he immediately stops and picks them up and carries them home.”

When the neighbor arrived at the family, it was empty.

Newport Beach police were alerted to their disappearance, searched the home for a welfare check and found blood in the master bathroom.

They also found the family safe open and empty.

There was no sign of Peter or QC Chadwick.

Investigators had no further details about the disappearance until Peter called 911 from a pay phone the next day and told officers that his wife had been murdered and that he had been kidnapped.

Officers soon discovered Chadwick was at a gas station several miles from the Mexican border, just two hours from Newport Beach.

In the murder-kidnapping investigation, Manzella said, “One thing was noticeably missing.”

“And that was any concern for his children.

CRACKS IN HIS STORY

Chadwick told investigators he hired the man to paint and killed the QC in the couple’s bathroom while Peter was at home.

He said he heard a scream and when he went to see what was causing the scream, the man held a pocketknife to Peter’s neck and forced him to wrap his dead wife’s body, put her in a car and drive him to the Mexican border. .

Investigators began to notice cracks in his story.

They began to focus their attention on Peter, believing him to be the number one suspect.

“It’s clear that whatever the other details are, QC was killed and her husband Peter was involved,” Manzella said.

“SHE FIGHTED THE GOOD FIGHT”

On October 11, Peter was arrested and charged with murder.

A week after the murder, Peter’s lawyer said he would cough up the place where the QC’s body was hidden.

Peter told police that her body was in a dumpster in Wildcat Canyon near San Diego.

After a search, they managed to find her body in a dumpster.

“She had extensive injuries,” said the medical examiner on the case, Dr. Robert Stabley.

“My first impression is that she experienced some trauma shortly before her death.

While conducting an autopsy, Stabley said she had been strangled.

“I believe she put up a good fight, she was traumatized by blunt force trauma and then the final attack was strangulation.

Chadwick pleaded not guilty and posted $1,000,000 bail.

“HE WAS VERY CONTROLLED”

QC’s friend said their marriage was falling apart.

“She wanted to please him,” Karen Thorp told 20/20.

“But he was very much in control.

“He’s in Santa Barbara staying with his dad,” ABC News contributor and crime reporter Pat Lalama said of Chadwick after he was arrested.

“He has a relationship with his children and has been appearing at hearings for two years.

“He’s performing in court,” Manzella said.

“He won’t do it in a day.

That was in January 2015.

Chadwick emptied his safety deposit box and fled to Mexico again, but this time he could not be traced.

MOST WANTED LIST

Six years after QC Chadwick’s murder, Newport Beach Police Department’s new sergeant, Court Depweg, launched a podcast.

After the first episode of “Countdown to Capture” in September 2018, police began receiving tips regarding Chadwick’s disappearance; they even offered a $100,000 reward to people for his capture.

Peter Chadwick was placed on the US Marshall’s 15 Most Wanted list.

At the end of the last episode of the podcast, Depweg sends a final message to Peter, who has been on the run for over three years.

“Peter, stop it now,” Depweg said.

“We’re coming for you.” This begins the countdown to capture.”

The US Marshalls and Mexican Federales learned that Peter had fled to Mexico after receiving tips and using their solid investigative background.

Police were able to track down his location after Peter called from Cholula, Mexico, 2,000 miles from Newport Beach, California.

He is currently serving 15 years to life in prison.
