Lençóis Maranhenses and Manaus are recommended by the New York Times

Lençóis Maranhenses and Manaus are two of the best places in the world to visit in 2023. The New York Times, which published a list of 52 places in the world to visit in 2023. The best is London (United Kingdom).

There were two landmarks in Brazil: Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, located 250 km from São Luís (Maranhão), and Manaus, the capital of Amazonas.

Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, ranked 11th on the NYT’s list, is described by the paper as a horizon of undulating white sand dunes in contrast to “supernatural” green and blue lagoons filled with rainwater.

“Walk down the basins, diving into the natural pools. Cross the area on horseback, stopping at “oases” along the way,” the text suggests.

Then the newspaper advises. It’s the antidote to that claustrophobic feeling of the Covid era – a vast lunar landscape where you can roam wild and free.”

The text criticizes the lack of phone and internet signal, in addition to the lack of comfort in the place.


Ranked 41st in the NYT’s recommendations, Manaus is characterized by the city’s gastronomic diversity, with ingredients available at the Adolfo Lisboa Municipal Market in addition to the magnificent Teatro Amazonas.

The gastronomic options are detailed as a “context of indigenous ancestry and interconnectedness in Brazilian culture.”

“At the natural Biatüwi restaurant, which uses recipes and ancestral cooking techniques, drinks are made with fermented purple yams, and chili peppers are used to clean river fish in spicy stews,” the text reads.

Also of note is the 19th-century Amazonas Theater, which combines paintings and impressive architecture on its three floors. Place is a reference of culture.

The ranking mentions London (United Kingdom) as a city ready for coronation, Morioka (Japan), a bucolic place, Hollywood’s Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park (USA), Vyosa River (Albania) for cycling.

Accra (Ghana) stands out for its traditional West African cuisine. Bhutan in Asia is associated with Buddhist temples, Guadalajara (Mexico) for quirky culture and Cuba (Central America) for beaches.

Boquete (Panama) is celebrated for its unexplored nature, and La Guajira (Colombia) for its beautiful sunsets.
