According to information from Caixa Econômica Federal, the forgotten prizes of lottery winners amounted to approximately 348 million rials dollars until November of this year. Initially, these awards not withdrawn on time are transferred to the Fund for Student Finance (FIES).
However, whoever wins the lottery game must withdraw their prize within 90 days. However, after the period, the money goes towards student loans. Caixa informs that the forgotten prizes managed by the bank include all types of games, bets and modes carried out in lottery shops throughout the country.
In 2021, resources forgotten by bettors amounted to R$ 491 million related to the months of January to September. Moreover, these amounts are considered wealth left in the box simply because the winners do not take it due to several factors, such as the bet not being verified, pure forgetfulness or even the loss of the lottery ticket.
Lotteries available from the bank are Mega sena, Dupla Sena, Quina, Lotofácil, Lotomania and Loteca. By the way, it should be noted that in June 2022 it was recorded that the awards would not be withdrawn. In the Mega Sena 2486 contest, 16 winners just didn’t claim their prize.
Over the past seven years, about R$2.8 billion has been forgotten by bettors and made available through Caixa within 90 days. After this period, the winning lottery player is no longer entitled to these amounts. Thus, the award is then used to help low-income students pursue higher education.
