Lula is finding it difficult to nominate a candidate in the DPU because of what he sees as a Bolsonarian list

Two months later, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) still has not been able to choose who will be the next federal public defender. According to the members of the government, there is an estimate that the three nominated by the triple list are supporters of the former president Jair Bolsonaro (LL).

The last occupant of the position, defender Daniel Macedo, was even nominated for re-election by Bolsonaro, but was not nominated on Saturday by Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), and the name was dropped by Lula when he took office.

Macedo is evangelical and seen by the Planalto House as aligned with Bolsonaro and conservative agendas.

The other two face resistance for the same reason. Igor Roque, former president of Anadef (National Association of Public Federal Defenders), even appeared as the favorite with the support of former federal deputy Joao Paulo Cunha. In recent days, however, a photo of him with Bolsonaro, who burned him during an argument, began to circulate.

Leonardo Magallia has already received criticism for being cited by the CPI for Covid. In the messages obtained by the parliamentarians, Bolsonaro’s ex-wife, Ana Cristina Valle, intercedes for him with then Secretary General Jorge Oliveira. He says Magalhães will be a candidate “in line” with their values, a “technician and supporter of Jair”.

Meanwhile, the supporters complain that the institution is headless and that important decisions are stalled.
