ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates – It took two attempts but UFC flyweight heavyweight Manon Fiorot finally met her opponent Katlyn Chookagian at UFC 280 on Saturday night.
“Disappointed (not part) of UFC France in Paris for the first time. But I love Abu Dhabi and I will really go there,” Fiorot told the media via an interpreter on a media day on Wednesday.
Fiorot (9-1) was set to face Jessica Andrade in Paris before Andrade was forced to withdraw. Chookagian actually accepted the match but then withdrew due to injury. So the match was pushed to UFC 280.
“It’s hard to watch because the UFC fans and the French fans are amazing. The French fighter (can) did a great job. I’m really sure the UFC will come back a few times in France and (I will) be a part of this,” Fiorot said.
The pairing with Chookagian was a big fight for Fiorot. Chookagian continued to defeat the fighter in hopes of challenging champion Valentina Shevchenko and still being a flyweight.
“That’s why I called Katlyn after the fight with Jennifer Maia because I wanted to show that I was ready for the championship fight,” she said.
When Alexa Grasso performed impressively last week with a victory over Viviane Araujo at the UFC APEX, many expected her to be crowned champion sooner rather than later.
“To be honest I (didn’t) watch the fight, I knew she won by judgment. I know she can do 5 rounds, so I think I can do better. I want to end my fight,” Fiorot said.
