Messi will return to PSG in early January, says Galtier – SABC News

Lionel Messi will return to Paris Saint-Germain in early January, the Ligue 1 club’s manager Christophe Galtier said on Tuesday.

The Argentina striker, a seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, scored twice to lead his country to a penalty shootout victory over France in the World Cup final nine days ago.

Messi, 35, will miss PSG’s home game against Strasbourg on Wednesday and away to Lens on Sunday.

He (Messi) had to return to Argentina for the celebrations, the receptions and we decided that he will be absent until January 1,” Galtier told reporters.

“So he will come and join us on the 2nd or 3rd so he can resume racing with us when he will have between 13 and 14 days of recovery.”

Galtier said all other players are back on schedule and will be available for Wednesday’s game, including France forward Kylian Mbappe.

Galtier played down suggestions of a rift between Messi and teammate Mbappe after the World Cup.

“There’s no reason to mix everything up in the relationship between Killian and Leo,” Galtier said. “Kilian has a very good attitude after losing the World Cup.

“When you lose a World Cup final, you have reason to be very, very disappointed. He was very disappointed but he knew how to carry on and behave and he had a lot of class to congratulate Leo and that’s very good for the club and for the team.”

PSG issued a statement saying Presnel Kimpembe will continue his recovery from an Achilles tendon problem for four weeks, while Nuno Mendes could resume training in two weeks after picking up a thigh injury during the World Cup .

PSG lead the table with 41 points after 15 games, five above second-placed Lance.
