Millions of Americans can claim $30 off Internet and $100 laptop credit — but the funds will run out

Eligible Americans may be running out of TIME to take advantage of some federal benefits.

Under the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), low-income households qualify for up to a $30 rebate and a one-time $100 credit toward a personal computer or tablet.

The program replaced a temporary emergency broadband benefit program that helped struggling households get Internet access during the pandemic.

Under the ACP, Americans on tribal lands can receive up to $75 a month.

Everyone else who is eligible can get up to $30 off.

More than 11.5 million households have signed up for benefits, according to the White House.

However, this is already taking a chunk out of the total $14.2 billion allocated to the program.

When funding may run out

As a result, The Hill projects that the program’s funding will be exhausted by mid-2024 based on how things play out.

While there is still plenty of time left, it will be up to Congress to monitor and provide support to the ACP if needed.

“We estimate that funding the ACP broadband benefit (but not the equipment) for the next five years could cost $30 billion to $35 billion,” The Hill wrote.

It is currently unclear whether lawmakers in Washington are interested in expanding the program in the future.

Who qualifies and how to apply

Since funding could run out if Congress doesn’t have to take action – you’ll want to take advantage of these federal benefits if you’re eligible.

To qualify, your household income must be less than 200% of the federal poverty guideline or receive benefits from SNAP, Medicaid, or other programs as determined by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

For example, a family of four with a household income of less than $55,500 may be approved for ACP benefits because the poverty line for a family of four is $27,750.

The FCC estimates that a total of 48 million households are eligible for the program.

According to the White House, more than 1,300 providers nationwide accept the ACP benefit.
