Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier today honored Germany’s traditional choirs and orchestras in Neubrandenburg. He awards the Zelter badge to choirs and the Pro Musica badge to orchestral associations. Both awards honor ensembles that have been around for 100 years; they are the highest honors for amateur musicians.

Starting at 11 a.m. in the Neubrandenburg Concert Church, the ceremony is the highlight of days of choral and orchestral music that began on Friday and runs through Sunday. Local music clubs, regional choirs and a wide variety of instrumental and vocal ensembles from Germany perform.

At the ceremony, a choir and an instrumental ensemble each received a plaque representing all of this year’s honorees. This year they are the Mahlow 1912 Mixed Choir from Mahlow (Brandenburg) and the Doctors Orchestra of Berlin. A total of 63 Zelter and 44 Pro Musica badges are planned to be awarded. The awards have been given since 1956 and 1968, respectively.
