NASA has discovered the perfect places for life on the moon. It is surprisingly warm in them

And it must be admitted that it is actually “warmth” and not “warmth for the moon”, although this only applies to some areas.

The NASA-operated Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter probe brought these areas. This artificial satellite of the Silver Globe has provided data showing that the depressions visible on the lunar surface can be much cooler than other areas where they rise above one hundred degrees Celsius during the day. They are also noticeably higher than at night, when the temperatures there drop even to minus 173 degrees Celsius.

However, if humanity is seriously considering maintaining permanent bases on the moon, it will be necessary to find places where they will actually exist. It just so happens that pits that maintain a constant temperature of 17 degrees Celsius sound like perfect places for would-be colonists to hang out.

The existence of these depressions has been known since 2009 – for many years scientists wondered if they led to caves that could be used as hiding places. In addition to temperature advantages, this type of site would provide other advantages, including protection against cosmic radiation, solar radiation, and micrometeorite impacts.

The moon’s springtime temperature would certainly make it habitable

The interesting thing is that there are so-called lava caves on Earth. They form when molten lava moves beneath cooler layers. Another scenario is that a crust forms over a river of lava, leaving behind a long empty tunnel. When the upper layer of such a cave collapses, an opening can be formed, which is a kind of depression. As David Page explains, humans evolved living in caves and will perhaps return to cave living on the Silver Globe.

Using data from a thermal camera, the scientists wanted to find out if the temperature inside the pits differed from that on the surface. The locality known as Mare Tranquillitatiswhere they used simulation to analyze the thermal properties of rock and lunar dust and determine the temperatures there.

It turned out that the temperatures there are really favorable for life and can be around 17 degrees Celsius. Thus, these depressions form the golden mean between daytime and nighttime temperatures. An important role in this case can be played by the overhangs, which limit the heating during the day and prevent the radiation of heat at night.
