North Korea says Covid outbreak started after contact with “aliens”

North Korea has concluded that its first outbreak of Covid-19 began with patients touching “aliens” near the border with South Korea, state media reported on Friday (local time).

“In early April, an 18-year-old soldier nicknamed Kim, a 5-year-old kindergarten boy nicknamed Wei, came into contact with the aliens on a hill near the barracks, in early April,” the KCNA said in a statement.

Ihpo-ri is a district in Kumgang County, on the east coast of the country, near the border with South Korea.

In early May, North Korea declared a state of emergency and imposed a nationwide blockade over the number of Covid cases in the country.
