This is very important news for hardware enthusiasts and fans of NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards. The manufacturer decided to cancel the premiere of the GeForce RTX 4080 in a 12 GB version, which was supposed to debut together with the much more advanced GeForce RTX 4080 16 GB.
GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB has been cancelled
Along with the powerful RTX 4090, the manufacturer announced two other graphics cards, the GeForce RTX 4080 version with 12 GB and 16 GB of video memory. At first glance, the lower model looks like a good option for those who want to save some money and don’t need 16 GB of video memory, because 12 GB is enough for them.
However, the famous saying “the devil is in the detail” works perfectly here. Both cards, apart from the amount of VRAM memory, differ in specifications. It is true that the RTX 3080 10 GB and 12 GB were also different in this aspect, but the RTX 3080 was based on a GPU with 8704 CUDA cores, and the 12 GB variant – 8960. The difference in this case was not so great.
While GeForce RTX 4080 16 GB is based on AD103 GPU with 9728 CUDA cores and RTX 4080 12 GB uses AD104 with 7680 CUDA units. This means that the model with less memory has more than 2000 fewer cores, which of course would result in much lower performance. The community did not like this and there were many comments on the web that the 12 GB version should be the RTX 4070 and not the 4080. The price played an important role here – the 16 GB version was supposed to cost $ 1199 and the 12 GB version – $ 899.
However, there will be no dilemma: the 12 GB version simply will not go on sale.
The GeForce RTX 4080 16 GB is still on the horizon
The premiere of the RTX 4080 with 16 GB VRAM is invariably scheduled for November 16 of this year. On this day, we will see the first non-reference versions made by manufacturers other than NVIDIA, and we will see, how does the card compare to the current gen top model, or RTX 3090 Ti – and it can be a very interesting comparison.
We wait a month – it’s a pity that then we will see only one map, but the decision is understandable.
