Oprah Winfrey’s father dies days after a family celebration in her honor

Oprah Winfrey’s father, Vernon Wiffrey, has died, the daytime doyenne announced on her Instagram page this Saturday (9), just days after hosting an event to celebrate his life.

“Yesterday, with his family at his bedside, I had the sacred honor of witnessing the man responsible for my life take his last breath. We could feel the Peace enter the room with his death,” Winfrey wrote in the post.

He said that Vernon Winfrey was born in 1933.

Vernon, 88, who owned and operated Winfrey Barber & Beauty Shop for more than 50 years, died Friday night after a battle with cancer, TMZ reports.

Earlier this week, Oprah Winfrey said on Instagram that the family had planned a “Veron Winfrey Appreciation Day” with a backyard barbecue for friends to celebrate because she’s sick. Her father thought it was a 4th of July party, she says in the video.

Oprah Winfrey turned a Chicago television talk show into a media empire that expanded into film, magazine, cable and radio productions, making her one of the richest women in the world.
