Jurgen Drews wants to end his career.
Almost everyone can probably sing along to “Ein Bett im Kornfeld”; now Jurgen Drews, the “King of Mallorca”, wants to resign. He recently talked about physical limitations, and now. even his famous pirouette isn’t that fast anymore. it’s time to say goodbye
Pop singer Jürgen Drews (“Ein Bett im Kornfeld”) wants to end his career and say goodbye to the stage at the end of the year. The 77-year-old man announced this on Saturday evening during the ARD show “The Big Schlager Beach Party” in Gelsenkirchen with Florian Silbereisen. “He wanted to thank fate,” Druce said with tears in his eyes. It was a pleasant time. He wants to make his last appearance in the fall in one of Florian Silbereisen’s hit shows.
“It’s time to put my personal life first. This year you will still be able to meet me at one or another event and see me on TV, but at the end of this year I will say goodbye to the stage,” Drews said in an interview with “Bild am Sonntag”. He is no longer as resilient as he used to be and feels that it is incredibly good for him to be at home.
Drews already announced at the end of May that he wants to step back for now. he reported that he suffers from a nerve disease, polyneuropathy. This disease is incurable, Drews said in an interview. He has a mild form of polyneuropathy. “It shows in the nerves. So I’m often a little shaky on my feet, I have to concentrate a lot if I have to walk long distances on stage.” And added: “I have no pain, but my body and condition are changing.”
In the case of polyneuropathy, the transmission of nerve impulses is disturbed, which is often first felt by tingling or burning. Sensory stimuli are enhanced, reduced, or not transmitted at all. For example, patients misperceive heat or cold, or feel pain even though there is no painful stimulus.
But it’s not just his illness that Drews wants to rest, he’s also experiencing the side effects of old age, is more tired than ever and “just has his niggles”. And his famous pirouette isn’t as fast as it used to be, he said. Drews said about his future retirement. “I’ll definitely miss the stage, but I’ve really experienced everything in the 60-plus years I’ve been doing this job.”
During the first one live, Drews, who still looks fresh and young in front of the camera despite his 77 years, first sang his hit “Ein Bett im Kornfeld” and then announced his farewell to his wife Ramona. Both of them had tears in their eyes. moderator Silbereisen and many people in the audience were visibly moved.
Drews, who grew up in Schleswig-Holstein, started out as a true jazz musician. But he really became famous for easy hits in the mid-1970s. “Ein Bett im Kornfeld,” his big hit, clearly thrives on the youthful vibe he conveys “among flowers and straw.” Drews later became the “King of Mallorca” and thus an icon of a scene where health is sometimes put aside for a good party.
At the same time, Drews has always shown that his role should not be overstated. “I’m just a person like everyone else, and my job is to make music and entertain people with it,” he explained when his autobiography (“Everything Was the Best”) was published. He is basically a “service provider”.
