Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra inspires camera testers
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is the best classic-design smartphone offered by the South Korean manufacturer. However, not everyone agrees when it comes to the capabilities of this flagship. The Koreans proved that the notorious testers didn’t appreciate the camera in the top eSce.
A scathing review of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphone’s cameras
Shortly after the premiere of the Galaxy S23 series, a camera test from DxOMark was published. This is probably the most famous benchmark in the smartphone segment – in the past, manufacturers often boasted about the results of their new products (Huawei in particular, but not only). At the same time, DxOMark can be described as the “most controversial camera tester”. It is worth mentioning here that not only cameras, but also, for example, speakers and batteries in smartphones are tested, but the tests of photo and film skills always cause the most controversy.
It was no different in the camera test in the Galaxy S23 Ultra – the smartphone received a total of only 140 points and is currently only 11th in the overall ranking. ex aequo with Google Pixel 7 and vivo X90 Pro+. Higher ratings were given to Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, iPhones 13 Pro and 14 Pro, and Huawei P50 Pro and Mate 50 Pro. The current leader is the HONOR Magic 5 Pro with 152 points.
DxOMark has been accused of being “paid” and unreliable in its tests, although the benchmark website describes the testing procedure in detail – the article includes, among other things, information about the importance of each aspect in the overall score and a test scheme (each using 3,000 photos and 150 minutes video recorded). Some manufacturers even “insulted” DxOMark and announced that they would not send their new smartphones for testing. That didn’t discourage the testers though – they’re still doing their job and still causing a lot of controversy.
It’s worth noting here that DxOMark tests cameras not only in top-of-the-line smartphones, but also in cheaper models, although their reviews make up a smaller part of the overall test pool – after all, more emphasis is placed on high-end devices because their tests are becoming increasingly broad comments, which only makes the benchmark (un)popular.
Excellent review of the cameras of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphone
Of course, Samsung did not comment on the DxOMark camera test in the Galaxy S23 Ultra. You can understand that – after all, there is nothing to brag about and not everyone needs to know that this benchmark is perceived by many as unreliable. However, the Koreans have decided to officially boast (with a message in their press office) that their latest flagship of the Galaxy S range has received the highest rating – 5 stars. in the independent review of the VCX Forum, a non-profit organization dedicated to technical research and evaluation of device apparatus. The rear camera module received 70 points and the front camera 64 points.
Interestingly, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra received exactly the same score as the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, however, the main camera scores very differently for individual aspects – this year’s model got more for the quality of photos (75 vs 73) and video ( 76 vs. 70), but at the same time much less for camera performance: AF / timing – 50 (vs. 54) and stabilization – 62 (vs. 72).
Like DxOMark, VCX Forum not only tests flagship smartphones, but also much cheaper ones. TOP 5, on the other hand, is one of Samsung’s flagships. It is interesting that there is no iPhone even in the TOP 10 – the first, the iPhone 14 Pro Max, is only in 11th place.
