Sony VPL-XW5000ES – the next generation home theater system

Recent years have not been kind to the cinema, but in the era of the pandemic, many people decided to make a cinema at home, a real cinema. Sony thought of all those who still have such dreams ahead of them or want to move to a higher level of their cinema adventure. The Sony VPL-XW5000ES is a game-changer in the home theater world. This is a new budget laser projector for cinema. The Sony Pro offering is almost “budget”, and from the point of view of our market, a premium device. Here’s how the Sony VPL-XW5000ES 4K laser projector fared in our tests.

Cinema at home – yes, it is possible

At first, it’s worth a little frustration or clarifying questions about home projectors. Projectors are niche technology, but at the same time, many people buy them without fully understanding what that means. First, don’t be fooled, a projector marked as 4K for 4-5 thousand zlotys will not offer you the quality of a 4K TV on a 120-150 inch screen. I can safely say that in this case you will get more interesting experiences than a budget 75-85-inch TV for 5-6 thousand. Modern television, and especially the content that is provided to us, offers a wide range of colors, HDR effects and a large amount of detail. And this, unfortunately, we will not notice in cheap projectors.

Secondly, to enjoy the home cinema, we need a completely darkened room, with the appropriate proportions of the distance between the projector and the screen and the screen! It can be painted on the wall with paint (special or adequately absorbing light), it can be a permanent screen, it can also be placed in a cassette, for example, hidden under a suspended ceiling or as part of a “wall” and electrically controlled. For this we need a signal source and an audio system for the projector.

If we want to really enjoy cinema at home, we need a properly designed and prepared space, as well as a range of components and meters of cables. But if we do it, we have such an area and budget resource, then we can achieve effects that we will not experience in most cinemas in the country. We are able to create a private, even luxurious cinema hall in the living room. It’s worth bearing in mind, it’s worth thinking about.

In my opinion, it makes no sense to make a makeshift home theater these days. It is much better to spend money on a large, much more versatile TV than to buy a projector for several thousand. The point of having a quality 65 – 75 inch TV and a weak projector with a large screen diagonal doesn’t seem very rational to me either. That’s why the premium projector sector is growing, also on the Vistula River, and if you’re going to a home theater at home, it’s worth using such a golden, if perhaps a little rough rule – either fat or not at all. And why this is so, you will understand when you meet me with the Sony VPL-XW5000ES projector.

Why is the Sony VPL-XW5000ES a revolution in the world of home theater projectors?

Sony is one of the few manufacturers in the home theater projector market that focuses only on high-end and mid-range equipment. All this because it offers its devices in SXDR technology. There is another Japanese brand on the market with a similar technical solution. However, most of the projectors available for sale are DLP and 3LCD technology devices. You shouldn’t get bored with the technical details of how it works here. It’s worth noting, though, that these are similar dilemmas to TVs where DLP and 3LCD struggle like OLED and LCD – differences in contrast, black level, brightness, etc. On the other hand, SXDR is a solution one step higher, combining the advantages of both technologies and eliminating their biggest disadvantages. Such a flagship LCD with MiniLED or even MicroLED.

This year, the Japanese decided to raise the bar a little higher and completely abandon the use of lamp projectors. Now the light source is a laser. Even in the base model in the range is the Sony VPL-XW5000ES. As a result, we get a phenomenal home theater projector with a laser light source for less than PLN 30,000 (currently around PLN 27-28,000 gross). This is a revelation, considering that the VPL model – the VW290ES with a lamp and less technical capabilities was at a similar price level at the time of the premiere. This is a breakthrough, or rather a technological leap – until recently, laser projectors cost hundreds of thousands of zlotys. Now it is really no longer the market of movie theaters in the emirates, but for any more affluent movie fan. That’s a price similar to flagship 83-inch OLED or 85-inch LCD TVs. Yes, of course you have to consider the additional costs and conditions, but these products are available to a fairly wide range of people, especially from a global perspective. At the same time, the set of features offered by the Sony VPL-XW5000ES is unique in this product category.

Smaller and bigger brother – two new products from Sony

With the debut of the Sony VPL-XW5000ES, the company also introduced the Sony VPL-XW7000ES model. This is a higher-end model, for people with twice the budget, but with even greater demands. Not only in terms of image quality, but also technical and location capabilities. The larger model is “larger in size”, while the significant changes are higher brightness (3200 lm vs. 2000 lm) and above all an advanced lens with autofocus and automatic position adjustment. In practice, this means that the HDR effects are even better, it is sometimes easier to use the projector in partial darkness and, above all, you can easily use different image formats or two types of screens thanks to the position adjustment. Then we can use the 16:9 format everyday, and when we release a movie with a different aspect ratio, it will be 21:9. In the case of the VPL-XW500ES, it’s generally a good idea to set up the projector “once and for all” during installation.

Sony VPL-XW5000ES – the joy of cinema

Image quality above all else! So you can summarize what we see on the screen during the projections with this projector. Of course, the laser, the SXDR display technology, the perfect lens, the X1 Ultimate for Projector image processor, the Triluminos system responsible for a wide range of colors and many other technologies, often hidden under futuristic-sounding marketing names, are responsible for this. What matters is how this projector lights up and what the effects are. And this is a joy for the eyes, a real feast of cinema. You can really enjoy the movies. Curl up in a comfortable armchair with a relaxation function and watch your favorite movies in a completely new experience. First of all, it is worth betting on a rich collection of movies on UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and content from the best streaming services such as iTunes Movies (Apple TV App) and Disney + or AppleTV + itself. This content with the highest bitrate, full of details, with effective HDR and at the same time combined with a good audio system will provide us with an experience that we will not experience in most cinemas.

At the same time, it is worth remembering that this is precisely this cinematic image. With different plastic from the TV image. Here we see HDR effects, we experience high brightness, but at the same time these are effects completely different from those of TVs. And it has its own unique charm and atmosphere. If we are fans of cinema and movies, here we can experience it in a unique way. Indeed, the Sony VPL-XW5000ES is a device that raises the bar a lot in terms of home theater quality at a high but still reasonable price, and at the same time makes you start dreaming of such a home theater in your own house. privacy. If you have such a cinematic teaser, it’s worth considering.

I think that screenings with sports shows on such a screen will also arouse a lot of emotions. This is not super smooth gear, we don’t have 120Hz here. Still, the experiences will be appealing to the eye. Also, when it comes to games, a certain star must be added. The input lag of this projector, depending on the mode and native resolution selected, can reach up to 13 ms. So for a projector this type of results are very good and even sensational. The picture quality itself is great and the gaming experience on such a big screen will be great. However, there is no support for HDMI 2.1 or 4K 120 Hz. So it might not be eSports gear, but if you want to play FIFA, it’ll be an afternoon well spent every now and then. This is equipment designed for cinema, home theater, or rather home theater.

Sony VPL-XW5000ES – I’d queue for it

If only I had the opportunity to build a professional version at home that the Sony VPL-XW5000ES deserves, I’d be at the stage of thinking about how to finance its purchase. Indeed, if you are thinking about a home theater, it is worth reaching for equipment of this class or better. At the same time, this is a new hand in the projector world, and I’m very happy that this market is alive. And unlike movie theaters, home cinema has bright prospects.
