XR & Metaverso is one of 25 tracks at SXSW 2023, but augmented reality (virtual, augmented and mixed reality) is cross-cutting and appears on the SXSW 2023 schedule, alongside a dedicated XR & Metaverso track.
They will be present at sessions by Amy Webb and Timmu Toke (Tech Industry), at the Mocap workshop (Game Industry) and at presentations by Rohit Bhargava, Neil Redding and Sandy Carter (all from the 2050 track), just to name a few examples. In addition to these sessions, we will have XR in various activations and special events. To reduce (or increase) hunger I will share some here.
XR Experience with 32 immersive and interactive experiences – highlighting Yuki MR from ARVORE Immersive Experiences studio and Eggscape (awarded at the Venice festival), both in mixed reality. Still, for those who love new gadgets, Yuki will be shown with Vive’s recently released XR Elite headset. We also have VR to be experienced horizontally by Lucas Rizzotto, a Brazilian living in the US and director of the poetic film Where Thoughts Go. Another Brazilian who will be present at the exhibition: do you remember maestro Billy do Caldeirão? He moved to Germany and is a reference in audio production for impressive content. Billy Mello produced the soundtrack for You Destroy. We Create, an experiment about how artists deal with the war in Ukraine. Symbiosis is multisensory and depicts a dystopian future under the influence of climate change. It promises to be well attended.
These experiences offer us the opportunity to understand why we use XR in industries as diverse as automotive, education, medicine and tourism – making the viewer a participant rather than someone who passively interacts with the content.
Leaving the XR Experience and coming to the activations, those in Austin will be able to learn more about what Niantic is exploring in augmented reality (https://schedule.sxsw.com/2023/events/OE43168). In its interactive showroom, Johnson & Johnson will showcase some of the uses of virtual and augmented reality in healthcare/medicine (https://schedule.sxsw.com/2023/events/OE43399). There’s also XR in the Immersive Futures Lab (https://schedule.sxsw.com/2023/events/OE43221); at KPMG’s Immersive Experience: The Human Element of Innovation https://schedule.sxsw.com/2023/events/OE43504) and even has a virtual influencer on Rainey Street (https://schedule.sxsw.com/2023/events / OE43172.
And if you still have some breath and space on your agenda, be sure to check out XR’s schedule of country and city homes, such as Vancouver Day (https://schedule.sxsw.com/2023/events/OE43573) featuring , entertainment and the presence of Nonny de La Pena, Ken Sim, Tony Parisi and Amy Peck, among other speakers.
