Taw Valley Hockey Club shines in County Champs

Fast and furious hockey continues to thrive in North Devon and one of our leading clubs is celebrating its 40th birthday.Thursday anniversary this year.

Taw Valley Hockey Club has senior and junior teams in all age groups, with the under 12 girls doing well at the recent County Championships held at Blundells School.

Set for a tough draw against clubs from across Devon, they set out on the astro with their formidable #smallyetmighty spirit, their hearts set on a place at the West Regional Championships in April.

A 1-0 win against Okehampton followed by a 2 0 win against Exe with goals from Jemima got Taw Valley off to the perfect start. Tougher opposition followed but shot through stopper Martha-May whose back lines of Livvie, Harriet and Isabel battled hard to keep the deficit to a minimum.

The final pool game against Exeter & Culm Vale Hornets was expected to be a tough game. Martha-May kept their cool and clean sheet with two more goals from Jemima and a goal for Ava, Rumi and Dakota as they won 5 0, all making their Championship debuts.

An impressive nine points placed the girls in 2nd place in the pool. The semi-final beckoned against Isca 1, who proved too strong on the day.

With only one Isca team able to qualify for Regionals, Taw Valley was still in the game. The winner of the bronze medal match would qualify instead of one of Isco’s teams in the gold medal match.

In a tight and even game against Dart, with both teams penetrating the D and shooting on target, it could have been anyone’s game. A single goal separated them, Jemima and Rumi both threatened to equalise, but it was not to be.

Isabel was awarded MVP for her determination to finish the tournament and a great achievement for everyone at Taw Valley Hockey Club – well played.
