That’s why the Oscars carpet won’t be red for the first time since 1961

The change was suggested by Vogue contributor Lisa Love and Met Gala creative director Raul Avila, both creative consultants for the event.

Present at the Oscars since 1961, the classic red of the carpet is giving way to champagne at the 2023 awards ceremony.

The change in tone for the performance comes with a change in the beginning of the ceremony to protect guests from inclement weather this year and to turn the celebrity entrance into an evening event – the entrance to the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles will be covered;

The change was suggested by Vogue contributor Lisa Love and Met Gala creative director Raul Avila, both creative consultants for the event. For love, the light of the time guests arrive and take photos, still in the afternoon, clashes with the elegant look used during the ceremony. “We turned a daytime event into a nighttime event,” the consultant told The Associated Press. “It is night, although it is still 3:00 p.m.”

From the decision that there would be a carpet at the entrance, explains Love, the team started experimenting with the most suitable colors for the carpet to avoid poor ambient lighting. According to the consultant, the main concern was not to violate the Oscar traditions. “It’s just a relief and I hope people like it. That doesn’t mean it’s always going to be a champagne-colored carpet.”

Love even claims that even though the play’s tone has changed, the moment could still be called a “red carpet,” referring to the celebrities’ arrival at the ceremony, rather than a literal description of the venue they’re walking into.
