The 18-year-old girl from Minas Gerais who discovered an asteroid will take a NASA course and could become the first Brazilian in space.

Laysa Peixoto Sena Lage, from Minas Gerais, achieved a feat desired by many professionals at the age of just 18. he discovered an asteroid and earned the right to name the discovery.

It all started early last year when a young woman saw an “asteroid hunt” campaign on NASA’s website.

“Since the beginning of the year, I have participated in NASA’s asteroid hunt. I view images through a telescope and study the solar system at the Institute in Hawaii. I analyze the image pixel by pixel, I notice some characteristics and values. Then I sent them a report. After a while they proved it was an asteroid and for now it will have my initials on it. I even got a certificate.” explained the girl.

In August 2021, Leysa named the asteroid “LPS 003”, the initials of his first and last names.

Nine months after the victory, the young woman took another step on her way. he is ready to take part in training to become an astronaut at NASA in the United States.

“I will be a member of Expedition 36 at NASA’s Advanced Space Academy, where I will train as an astronaut. This is a big step in my journey to become the first Brazilian woman to go into space, which is my biggest goal,” said Laysa.

The young woman was chosen for the expedition after being controversially known for discovering an asteroid and winning several Science Olympiad medals.

“It’s an indescribable experience, it’s always been my dream to be able to contribute to physics, science (…) I’ve always been in love with the stars, and the happiest thing for me is that I studied all the way through public school. life, so no matter where a person studied, he can realize his dreams and get what he wants,” he noted.
