The GeForce premiere has been postponed. It was about confusing markings

The GeForce RTX 4080 12GB graphics card will not be available for sale at the moment, although the RTX 4080 16GB will be available for purchase from November. This is the result of well-deserved criticism, because the two cards differ in much more than just memory.

Excluding price and power consumption, the GeForce RTX 4000 appears to be basically unbeatable graphics chips. Incredible performance combined with almost magical technologies definitely makes AMD and Intel a lot to think about. Although the price of these cards right now is in line with their performance: they are absurdly expensive.

However, high prices are not the biggest problem, because those prices will surely fall over time. The markings on the new cards are much more severe. So far they’ve been pretty logical. Generally, the numbers indicated the graphics chip, and the additional indication the installed memory. Not this time. It turned out that the RTX 4080 was not equal to the RTX 4080. Therefore, some cards will be delivered to stores with a delay.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB vs RTX 4080 16 GB.

The RTX 4080 12 GB should cost PLN 5,300, while the RTX 4080 16 GB would cost PLN 7,050. Only the second card will be available for sale. The premiere of the first was postponed under the influence of mass and well-deserved criticism. These two cards are more than just memory differences.

The cheaper one contains 7680 CUDA cores, is clocked at 2.31 GHz (2.61 GHz in Boost), and the graphics SoC as a whole offers 639 TFLOPS in SI calculations, 92 TFLOPS in ray-tracing calculations and 40 TFLOPS in shaders. The more expensive card has 9728 CUDA cores, is clocked at 2.21 GHz (2.51 GHz in Boost) and provides 780 TFLOPS in SI calculations, 113 TFLOPS in ray-tracing calculations and 49 TFLOPS in shaders. They are two completely different cards, even though they have the same name.

It is unclear when the cheaper card will be available for sale. And most of all, what should it be called. However, it is good that Nvidia has gone to the head. The designation was so misleading that, according to some, it could end up in a collective consumer lawsuit.
