The Giants re-sign RB Matt Breida while Saquon Barkley awaits the extension
The New York Giants re-sign backup Matt Breda to a one-year, $2.3 million deal with incentives, According to Jordan Schultz of theScore. The Giants ensure they have extra talent in their backyards as superstar RB Saquon Barkley awaits an extension after being hit with the franchise’s pennant last week.
Giants re-sign RB Matt Breida
Breda signed with the Giants last season after spending the 2021 season in Buffalo while Giants head coach Brian Dabul served as the Bills’ offensive coordinator. The 28-year-old must have instilled some confidence in the Big Blue’s coaching staff, as he’s being paid a $2.3 million salary for next season, well above the veteran’s minimum contract price.
Breeda appeared in all 17 games for the Giants last season, taking 54 carries for 220 yards and 1 touchdown. He also added something in the passing game, making 20 receptions for 118 yards.
Breida is a solid backup who could see more playing time in the 2023 season after playing well and earning a pay raise this season. A backyard one-two punch from Saquon Barkley and Matt Breda can be an effective ground attack.
Re-signing Breda is unlikely to change the Giants’ plans to extend Saquon Barkley. After tagging Barkley last week, the Giants have made it clear that they plan to extend the 2022 Pro Bowler Championship. Breda will continue to play in Barkley’s reserves in 2023, barring any drastic changes.
