In short, after the New York Mets traded catcher, James McCann, they made another move. Former Chicago White Sox player Dani Mendyk has signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Mets.

Mendyk, from Rochester, New York, turned 29 three months ago. He has four years of MLB experience, all with the White Sox. During those four seasons, he only played in 151 games.

Mendick’s career batting average to this point is . 251. 308 in his rookie year, but that came in just 16 games. In 2022, he hit . 289, but only appeared again in 31 games (97 at bats) as he tore his anterior cruciate ligament. In his only year with significantly more batters (2021, 164 at bats), Mendyk has a career-worst batting average of . 220. He has 10 career paths at home.

Defensively, Mendick played most of his career starts at two positions at center, second base and shortstop.

Mets quarterback Dani Mendyk adds:

At this time, Mendick, who has not been tendered by the White Sox, comes away with four years of team domination over the Mets and two minor league options remaining as well.

It looks as though Mendick will provide the Mets with some depth for now. The Mets’ four starting players after signing Carlos Correa are clearly set with Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil and Francisco Lindor. Mendick will join the likes of solid backups Eduardo Escobar and Luis Guillorme, barring any deals that might include Escobar or Guillorme.

Mendik is still a young player who doesn’t have a lot of experience under his belt (446 games on the board). This gives him some potential going forward especially knowing the Mets will have four years of control. His two best seasons with .308 and .289 batting averages certainly make him a polarizing addition for the Mets in this active off-season.
