Late last night, the New York Mets made the inevitable move everyone was expecting. After two disastrous years at Queens, the team dealt James McCann to a trade with the Baltimore Orioles.

The Mets also fielded cash considerations in the deal with the Orioles. According to John Heyman of the New York Post and MLB Network, the Mets will pay 75% of McCann’s $12 million salary to the Orioles.

In return, the Mets got a player to be named at a later date.

Transferring James McCann was a move the Mets had to make:

During his two years with the Mets, McCann batted . 22 and . 195. He was only available for 61 games in 2022. He played in 185 total games with the Mets, hitting just 13 home runs and driving in just 64 runs.

With the Mets aggressive at all times, handing out big contract after big contract, they needed to start cutting some contracts from their payroll. McCann was well documented throughout. While they have to pay a third of McCann’s salary, they have at least managed to rip some money from the books.

Not only has McCann’s contract and play made him a logical player to move, but the catcher position currently has some solid depth. The Mets recently got out and acquired Omar Narvaez. They have Thomas Nido, who outperformed Macan last year, especially on the next stage. Finally, the Mets have a big baseball prospect, Francisco Alvarez, who needs more opportunities in 2023. With three players in place, the Mets had to move McCann.

McCann was widely expected to be a player the Mets were looking forward to dealing with. The questions were would the team want to trade for him, and how much of his salary would the Mets have to afford? Although they have to pay most of it, this was a deal the Mets had to make.
