WhatsApp (Android, iOS) users can now create their own custom avatar to use in their profile picture and stickers shared within the app. The innovation, announced this Wednesday morning, 7, by Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, is already available worldwide.

In addition to a new form of personalization, the feature could help preserve the privacy of people who prefer not to use a real photo. According to a press release from Meta, billions of combinations of hairstyles, facial features and clothing are possible.

Users also have 36 custom avatar stickers at their disposal, which reflect different emotions and actions. They can be used in the profile picture and shared in the WhatsApp chat, even by other people, when they receive the stickers.

“More styles will be available soon in all our apps,” Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook profile. New forms of customization will be offered in the future, such as style enhancements including lighting, shading and hair textures.

Meta has already introduced its avatars on other platforms. On Facebook (Android, iOS), it can be used in your profile picture, Stories, Messenger (Android, iOS) and news feed. On Instagram (Android, iOS), within Stories and Direct Messages (DM). Virtual dolls are also used in Horizon Worlds, Meta’s virtual reality social platform.

The new avatars are a preview of functionality that should be launched in 2023. At an event held in October 2022, the tech giant announced that it will be possible to use its virtual doll to make video calls on Messenger and WhatsApp. The feature will feature tracking technology made by the device’s camera and microphone.

To create your avatar, go to Settings, tap Avatar, then tap Create Avatar, following the on-screen steps. To use it as your profile picture, tap Settings, then your profile picture, tap Change and Use Avatar.
