The parliament of the state of Hesse has commemorated the third anniversary of the death of the assassinated President of the Kassel region Walter Lübke. “His assassination still amazes us today, three years later,” Frank Lortz (CDU), vice-speaker of the state parliament, said at the start of a parliamentary session in Wiesbaden on Thursday. “But it is an impetus for all of us to always uphold the core values of our democracy.”

Walter Lübke was killed by a right-wing extremist on the night of June 2, 2019 on the balcony of his house in the Kassel district. He had previously presented the refugee accommodation programs in the city assembly in response to the abuses, he said. “It is worth living in our country. We must stand up for values. Anyone who does not share these values can leave this country at any time if they do not agree. That is the freedom of every German. ” Lubke’s statements are said to have been the motive for his later assassination.

In late January 2021, the Frankfurt High Court sentenced Lübke’s killer to life in prison for the murder. The verdict is not final yet, but the federal court in Karlsruhe plans to announce the decision on August 25. Both the criminal and all the other parties involved in the proceedings had appealed.
