The Secretary of São Paulo excludes the municipal regulation of motorcycle taxis

The Municipal Secretary of Mobility and Traffic of the capital city of São Paulo, Ricardo Teixeira (right. in the photo), stated that, while he is in the city hall, the legislation for motorcycle taxi services in transport applications should not be published. . In a conversation with Mobile Time this Thursday, the 9th, the secretary stated that the arrangement for the new modal is not feasible for the city.

According to him, there are several problems, such as the different topography of São Paulo, the chaotic traffic and the excess of accidents among motorcyclists. Currently, the number of deaths of these drivers in the city is about 1 per day, while the rate of car drivers and passengers is 0.3.

Teixeira recalled that the municipal administration has an annual average target of 4.5 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in traffic accidents for the year 2024. In 2022, the city’s average was 6.5.

The municipality has bet on reducing traffic deaths with the support of motorbikes. Its flagship is the ‘blue belt’, a corridor dedicated to motorcyclists in major traffic concentrations (Avenidas 23 de Maio, Avenida dos Bandeirantes, Marginal Pinheiros and Viaduct Aliomar Baleeiro). In 2022, countries that received the banner had zero deaths, in addition to a reduction in motorcycle accidents.

Uber launched the mode in São Paulo on January 5 of this year. On the same day, the municipality issued a decree suspending all such operations in the city. However, Uber continued to operate the service and mandated that motorcycle taxi rides follow federal legislation and that rides operate in other cities as of 2020.

On January 10, the city of São Paulo launched a task force to assess the impacts of motorcycle taxi rides on traffic, health and finances in the capital. On January 16, 99 began registering riders to begin service on January 31.

Since the two companies did not withdraw from the suspension and GT, Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) raised his tone and threatened to cancel the registrations of 99 and Uber in the city on January 27. After that, 99 canceled the launch and Uber removed the modal from its app.
