This confusing Netflix movie is worth every thousandth of your time, but you didn’t watch it
In “Caliber” (2018), a man finds himself in a phase of life when all the responsibilities of fatherhood are somewhat overwhelmed, although he has no idea of the pleasure that this new situation can give him, he begins to shake his story, as does Unworthy A suitcase overstuffed, in search of any memory that might justify the trip. The character of Jack Lowden, the hero of Matt Palmer’s film, seems somewhat out of place in light of the importance of the path he took, if he decided at all. For this and other reasons, he unhesitatingly accepts Marcus’s invitation by Martin McCann to hunt in the Scottish Highlands in the northwest of the country, without even knowing how to shoot or showing even the slightest taste for the activity. . As the story progresses, it becomes increasingly clear that his only desire is to please his friend, whom he has not seen in fifteen years.
The arrival of the two in the small town chosen by Marcus is the beginning of the second act of the film. A clichéd depiction of situations in plots like this – outsiders spending money (Marcus is better off than Vaughn, that is), so well-dressed and obviously sophisticated that they walk into the only bar in the area and soon get in. Approached by beautiful and uninhibited women – Palmer’s script avoids the sameness by presenting the village leader Logan as a kind and intelligent guy who is really interested in restoring the place where he lives (and perhaps this is the only reason he is so kind to visitors). Tony Curran’s character does not sympathize with sport hunting at all, but he has no choice: either obey or the city will sink forever. The friends enjoy Vaughn’s last bachelorette weekend, and Marcus always seems to have the most fun. After a night of drinking for both of them, Marcus wakes up the next morning to take Vaughn out to the fields to see what his guns can do for them, in addition to drugs and sex.
Although it does not serve the role of the film it is based on, between the lines “Caliber” offers an interesting point of view of the director on such issues as the free sale of weapons, alcoholism, drug addiction. about the dangers of friendships in which one side carries far more weight than the other and always leaves him at a clear disadvantage with no way out, a reasoning that runs through the plot until the end, when the outcome finally settles the matter for Vaughn. – In any case, regarding Markus. Vaughn goes to the corpse first, but Sam’s father, Logan’s brother, finds them, the shooter, and the dead boy. Thinking he’ll settle the bill, Marcus shoots the man in the chest. They try to escape the maddened mob that chases them along the back roads bordering the forest while dodging gunfire that rains down on both of them, but one of the shells hits the tank of the car. They get out of the car and run into the woods with the angry dogs chasing them.
“Caliber” leads to a perverse ending, recalling the central axis of Argentina’s “O Cidadão Ilustre” (2016), directed by Gaston Duprat and Mariano Cohn, which in turn is based on maximal works of philosophy, such as the classic “O”.
